Mikron supports and coaches world-class robotics team
or many years, the Mikron Group has been committed to the promotion of young scientists in a wide variety of ways, including sponsorship for a talented team of students from Ticino in national and international Lego robotics competitions. The Smilebots team recently celebrated a major success: 12th place in the World Championships in Detroit. The seven students from Lugano prevailed among a total of around 40,000 teams worldwide. The talented robotics squad from Ticino was coached by Corrado Corsale, robotics and IT specialist at Mikron Machining in Agno.
Across the globe, the First Lego League initiates and promotes among children and adolescents the mindset adopted by scientists and engineers. To this end, the teams of students seek to find solutions to a real-world problem as part of a research project. They build, test, and program using Lego Mindstorms a fully automated robot that must overcome tricky missions. While preparing for the competition, the teams acquire important social skills such as the ability to work in a team and lateral thinking, and they learn a lot about complex technologies. The Smilebots team supported by Mikron was the only Swiss team to qualify for the World Championships in Detroit (USA) at the European Final in Bregenz (Austria).
Corrado Corsale, who coached the Smilebots team both at the European and World Championships, was impressed by his team’s inventiveness, enthusiasm, and commitment: “It is simply incredible how these young people have developed in such a short time and come together as a powerful team with so much fun and imagination. Twelfth place out of 106 participants in the World Championships is the well-earned reward for all their hard work.” You can see how the team Smilebots did at the World Championships in Detroit in the video:
